CRA: 3 Letters That Open a World of Opportunity for Medical Imaging Leaders
February 19, 2025 - Mario Pistilli, DBA, FACHE, FAHRA, CRA, CNMT
AHRA's Certified Radiology Administrator (CRA) credential is an exam-based certification designed specifically for medical imaging administrators. Widely respected in the industry, it provides a competitive edge for those who earn the designation.
The deadline to apply for the May 2025 testing window is quickly approaching, with the application period closing on Monday, March 3. I wanted to take a moment to personally share the impact the CRA credential has had on my career.
Obtaining the CRA designation was a pivotal point in my career growth and played a key role in how I secured my current position at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Prior to this role, I was quietly working and living my life in suburban Chicago, not seeking a career change. One day, I received a random call from a recruiter about a director’s role at CHLA. My initial reaction was, “No thanks, I’m not interested.” But a week later, the recruiter called again, explaining that I had been highly recommended by others. He asked if I would be open to a brief conversation to learn more about the opportunity.
I agreed to talk, thinking a conversation wouldn’t hurt. Sure enough, the role piqued my interest, and I wanted to learn more. I flew to Los Angeles for an interview, still unsure if I would even want the position or would secure an offer. During my tour and meetings with the team, I immediately fell in love with their mission. The recruiter later shared with me that he had been searching for candidates with CRA credentials on LinkedIn, as it was a requirement for the role. When he reached out to other CRAs, my name was recommended. For me, earning the CRA credential not only helped me secure the role at CHLA, but also connected me to a community of CRAs who advocated for and supported me.
The CRA credential is a validation of one's mastery of the core skills essential for effective imaging leadership. The exam covers a broad range of concepts and tasks that one is likely to encounter in a leadership role. The three letters after my name signal to employers that I possess the necessary skills for imaging leadership and that I take my profession seriously enough to pursue this credential.
AHRA and the Radiology Administration Certification Commission (RACC) are working hard to grow the ranks of CRAs, as well as to increase recognition of the credential. We are advocating for employers to require it for all medical imaging leaders. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) also recognized the CRA in a recent white paper as a critical element on the pathway to leadership.
Beyond advancing my career, the CRA credential has provided me with a meaningful way to give back and contribute to the growth and development of my colleagues. I find it personally fulfilling to encourage others to take the exam and help them prepare. My hope is that as more leaders earn the CRA credential, they, too, will give back by supporting others in their journey toward certification.
While the CRA exam can be a scary undertaking, sometimes all it takes is a little push or the encouragement of someone who believes in you to overcome that initial fear. AHRA offers numerous resources and opportunities to help with preparation, from workshops to study materials, and there is a supportive network of CRAs, just like me, who are ready to lend a helping and guiding hand.
Earning your CRA is not only a source of pride, but also a way to join a supportive community of professionals who are eager to help each other succeed. The deadline for the May 2025 exam is fast approaching (Monday, March 3), but good news—if you need more time, applications for the November 2025 exam will open on Monday, June 2, and close on Monday, September 8.
Please consider joining me in earning your CRA and celebrating with us in person at our special reception during the 2025 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas this August. (And don't forget to join in the group photo, too!)
