Shining a Light on Exceptional Care
Behind every scan and every image is a medical imaging caregiver doing quiet, careful work that helps a patient move toward an answer. The Luminary Award, a program to honor the imaging staff members who go above and beyond at Community Hospital East, exists to make sure that work and the compassion behind it never goes unseen.
Recognition Born on the Front Lines
Recognition has a quiet power in healthcare. A word of thanks, a name read aloud, a pin worn on a badge are just small gestures that remind caregivers that their work matters. The leaders of medical imaging at Community Hospital East saw that power at work in recognition programs across the Community Health Network, and they wanted the same for their own team.
The idea was simple but deliberate: Create a homegrown honor, by and for the medical imaging department, that would shine a light on the caregivers who consistently go above and beyond for patients and families. From its earliest planning in 2018, the program was shaped to be authentic to the department, reflecting its values, its people, and the realities of imaging work. It would not be handed down from somewhere else; it would be built from the inside, by the very team it was meant to celebrate.
Development began with a conversation about what a medical imaging recognition award could look like. The original working name was the Imaging Monthly Award, before the team settled on a quarterly award cadence and the Luminary Award name that the program carries today.
Drawing Inspiration From Other Healthcare Awards
As the department’s management team explored the possibilities, they drew inspiration from two respected healthcare honors and set out to adapt the best of both to the world of medical imaging. The DAISY Award, facilitated by the DAISY Foundation, is known across healthcare for honoring extraordinary and compassionate nurses; its companion, the Sunflower Award, extends that spirit of gratitude to members of the wider care team. Together they offered a proven model: recognition that is meaningful, merit-based, and rooted in an organization's own values.
The DAISY Award is based on nominations. The recipient must meet criteria set by the organization. It’s not just based on skills, but on the nominee’s commitment to strong patient care and compassion. That guidance became the foundation for the Luminary Award’s own criteria.
Community’s medical imaging department was deliberate in its choice to present the award quarterly. Larger teams, like nursing, can recognize an honoree every month, because the size of the staff supplies a steady stream of nominations. Medical imaging is a smaller group, so the slower cadence is intentional, keeping each honor prominent and meaningful, ensuring that being named a Luminary remains a genuine distinction rather than a routine rotation.
At every step, the aim was to keep the program meaningful and unmistakably the department's own. From first idea to first honoree, the program came together over a year of thoughtful work:
What It Means to Be a Luminary
As the program took shape, the team anchored it to three commitments that still define the Luminary Award today:
- Provide ongoing recognition of the skill and compassion medical imaging professionals offer patients, families, and coworkers all year long.
- Keep the nomination process simple and accessible, so anyone can take part.
- Empower a selection committee that upholds a consistent set of criteria when choosing each honoree.
Together, these commitments balance two ideas that can be hard to hold at once: that recognition should be heartfelt and personal, and that it should be fair and consistent.
It would be easy to assume an imaging award is meant only for technologists, but the Luminary Award was intentionally built to be the opposite. Eligibility is intentionally broad. Exceptional patient care is a team effort, from the person who greets and registers a frightened patient, the aide who helps them onto the table, the partner who transports them safely, the assistant who keeps the day running, to the leader who makes it all possible. Every one of these roles is eligible, and every one is deserving of this award.
No role is too behind-the-scenes to be a Luminary. Anyone whose work helps a patient, directly or quietly, in scrubs or at a desk, can be nominated and recognized for it.
How a Winner Is Chosen
One of the program's defining choices was to put selection in the hands of the staff themselves. The Luminary Award is governed by a committee, either nominated by their own colleagues or volunteers. Anyone in the department can serve, and members are chosen for the trust and respect they hold among their peers. The result is recognition that comes from within the team, carrying the weight that only a colleague’s regard can.
Choosing a single honoree from a stack of heartfelt nominations is no small task, and the committee approaches it with care. Beyond the story in each nomination, members consider the fuller picture of a nominee’s work: skill and performance, attendance, and the perspectives of those who work most closely with them, including lead technologists and coworkers. The aim is a decision grounded in both heart and evidence — a winner whose everyday work, not just a single moment, reflects the standard the award was created to honor. Each nomination is also recorded in the employee’s department file, so the recognition becomes a lasting part of their story at Community.
The committee is the engine of the Luminary Award, and the nominations are its fuel. They can come from anyone. A nomination doesn’t require special language or formality. What matters most is a specific story: a moment when a medical imaging teammate made a patient feel seen, eased a family’s worry, or quietly went the extra mile to help someone in need. The commitment, the compassion, and the human connection are what bring a nominee’s character to life for the committee, and what makes the recognition so meaningful when it is earned.
Honoring a Luminary
Recognition is made real with a ceremony to announce the winner and present a few tokens of appreciation. In the beginning, every honoree received a certificate marking their achievement, a ceremonial pin, and a reserved parking spot to enjoy until the next Luminary is named.
The pin itself was created specifically for the program. Its emblem, a lit torch encircled by a laurel wreath, is rich with meaning. The torch is a symbol of guidance and illumination, and the laurel is a timeless mark of honor and achievement. The pin is small enough to wear on a badge, and built to last as a durable, visible reminder of a caregiver’s impact and of a department that notices.
Beyond those three staples, recognition has evolved over the years. Every honoree gets their own added touches of appreciation such as meal passes, floral bouquets, and branded logo apparel among them. Small, thoughtful extras keep the recognition feeling fresh and personal from one to the next.
The Bigger Goal
The Luminary Award was never meant to be just a certificate and a pin. Its creators hoped the program would ripple outward, strengthening job satisfaction, supporting retention, and deepening the sense of teamwork and pride within the medical imaging department. The thinking was that, over time, a culture of recognition could help sustain something larger still: a healthier, more connected work environment where everyone feels genuinely valued.
That ambition reflects a simple truth about healthcare: the people who care for patients are better able to do so when they themselves feel seen and supported. Each quarter’s honoree is a reminder to the whole department that excellence does not go unnoticed.
The best part of the Luminary Award is that anyone can take part. Patients, families, physicians, and fellow caregivers are all invited to nominate a medical imaging team member whose care left a mark. A nomination needs only a name and a story that captures the nominee’s commitment, compassion, and connection to patients and families.
Quarter by quarter, the Luminary Award continues its quiet work naming the caregivers who light the way for others and reminding the entire department that excellence is noticed. Every nomination is a thank you. Every honoree is proof that going above and beyond does not go unseen. And every pin worn in the halls of Community Hospital East carries the same message: Exceptional care shines here.
