A Break from the Daily Grind

May is one of the best times to visit the Coastal Empire’s most popular city, Savannah, GA. If you have never visited Savannah’s 22 downtown squares before, you really need to include this on your bucket list. Savannah’s squares are full of history and are breathtakingly beautiful all year round. Southern food and hospitality are abundant and fantastic.

On May 14, St. Joseph’s/Candler Healthcare System along with Hitachi Medical Systems hosted an AHRA local area meeting at the Marriott Courtyard in beautiful downtown Savannah. Approximately 25 radiology imaging professionals attended the meeting, along with 10 or so vendors, to hear presentations on radiation dose management and the latest XR-29 standards, actual applications of radiation dose reduction in practice from a community hospital’s perspectives, and how a physicist can facilitate in getting you started and monitoring progress. Pamela Odina, Territory Sales Manager from Snap Diagnostics, presented “Radiation Dose Management with the XR-29 Standard.” I presented “Implementation of Radiation Dose Management from a Community Hospital Perspective,” and Michael Cuddy from Phoenix Technology Group presented results from various efforts to reduce radiation exposure and what it all means from a physicist’s perspective.

Dave Allison from Hitachi Medical Systems welcomed everyone, gave a brief introduction to the meeting, introduced the guest speakers, and then invited everyone to a traditional southern style buffet dinner. Participants attending had a chance to interact with their colleagues, listen to some great presentations, and participate in beneficial discussions that followed each session. It was a great meeting in a beautiful city. CEU were earned, and it was a nice chance to get away from the everyday grind of the work environment. Some of the members took advantage of the nice weather afterwards by travelling to nearby Tybee Island to hang out on the beach or took a long weekend to visit the sights and sounds of Savannah.
